Rich in polyphenols
Berries provide higher polyphenol levels than many fresh fruits. Of these berries, cranberries are some of the most nutritious. In fact, the pigments that give cranberries their deep red colouring are powerful polyphenols. These tiny champions are a rich source of vitamin C, proanthocyanidins and the flavonoid quercetin.
The benefits of cranberry tablets
Researchers in Finland found that regularly drinking cranberry juice may cut the risk of urinary tract infection by half, particularly in women. The researchers involved in the study concluded that cranberries seemed to help reduce the amount of harmful bacteria and toxins colonising in the urinary tract. In a similar way, cranberries may also help to reduce the growth of bacteria that lead to gastric ulcers.
There is evidence to suggest that cranberry tablets may be even more beneficial than cranberry juice, because they are sugar-free. For this reason, many people find cranberry tablets to be a convenient alternative as they offer all the benefits of cranberries without the high sugar content.
